Homeschooling so far...year 1

This year we decided to try and homeschooling our kiddos. After some bad experiences with public school and Mr. Growls on the way (now here!), we felt staying home would be best.
These are a few things I've learned here in the beginning. Plus what curriculum we're using,

Never had me or Mr. C been homeschooled. So we really didn't know what to expect. But thankfully the internet exists today and we were able to read up on what to do and do nots.
And here's what I've learned so far:

  • Reading, Writing, and Math. These are the only real subjects you need focus on. Mostly in these first years. K-4 Everything else will follow. So don't stress out!
  • Learning styles. It's easy to get caught up in all the studies and quizzes just to find your kiddo's learning style. It's ok to read up on it, I found it sorta helpful. But I also learned it can change with subjects! Little Miss hates just sitting. She's always up and moving. So writing, math problems, and handwriting was a chore. But for some reason, she will sit perfectly still for read alouds. She becomes so enthralled with the story nothing else matters.
  • Your learning style. You may say, "I'm not learning! I'm the teacher!" Well yea, but it'll help you teach if you know how you learn! I'm more of a sit-down-one-session kind of learner and Little Miss multi-sessions. So you can imagine the chaos when I can't understand why it's taking so long for one project! Learning how you learn will help you teach and less hairpulling!
  • Don't underestimate the power of field trips. Everything can be school. Art, concerts, car trips, and even park/hikes! Take some time away from the desks! You will all be thankful.

This first year we decided to forgo making our own lesson plans and to go with a pre-made entire curriculum. After looking through countless sites and reviews we went with Sonlight Christian Homeschool.  Little Miss started with core b+c (we changed just recently to just core b.), Language Arts, Science kit biology/botany/physics, and Singapore Math.
The lesson plans are easy to follow but leave plenty of room to change them if need be. We are very happy with the progress and plan to use them again next year.

What's your homeschool plans? Do you DIY or follow other lessons?
